Negative Pressure Rooms
Air Systems – COVID-19

TMI® provides retrofits of medical examination rooms and dental operatories to Negative Pressure Room Air Systems. Rooms are converted into negative pressure rooms with high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter 99.97 effective (.3 microns) for patients undergoing Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGP), or patients of high risk factors.

TMI® retrofits provide a negative pressure system (NPS) of -2.5 pascals (PA) or better when measured with reference to adjoining corridor. Negative pressure room retrofits provide 12 air changes per hour (ACH).

Recommended by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance for “Interim Infection Prevention and Control Guidance for Dental Settings During the COVID-19 Response” and “Interim Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations for Patients with Suspected or Confirmed Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) in a Healthcare Settings”, along with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) guidelines.

Featured Projects

University of Maryland – Interdisciplinary Life Science Building – Maryland
Scope: Building Envelope Commissioning
The air tightness target was .40cfm per square foot of building envelope surface area at 75 pascals of pressure as measured in accordance with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Air Leakage Test Protocol. The project resulted in a .138cfm/sqft at 75 Pa., which is approximately one-third the rate allowed by the job specifications and approximately one-half the rate allowed by the stringent U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Air Leakage Test Protocol. TMI® provided inspections and testing during the installation of the AB material, in-situ testing at critical stages of construction and final whole building air tightness testing.

Worcester County Library – Berlin Branch – Maryland
Scope: Building Envelope Commissioning
Worcester County wanted the most energy efficient building possible. The air tightness target was .15cfm per square foot of building envelope surface area at 75 pascals of pressure as measured in accordance with the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers Air Leakage Test Protocol. The General Contractor contacted TMI® early on and submitted our credentials to the County for review. After careful consideration the County selected TMI®.

TMI® provided a detailed review of the design for air barrier (AB) continuity, inspections and testing during the installation of the AB material, and in-situ testing at critical stages of construction. TMI® reviewed the architectural drawings and identified a number of construction details where loss of air barrier continuity occurred. TMI® marked up the plan details to cost-effectively correct the continuity loss before the start of construction. TMI® conducted in-situ assembly testing at wall to roof connections, wall to fenestration connections, and wall to slab connections.

Early on, wall to slab testing revealed critical connections recommended in the TMI® Air Barrier Design Review were missed during the construction. TMI® recommended alternate, cost effective measures to correct the loss of continuity. Follow-up testing confirmed the corrections were effective. Fenestration testing for air and water tightness revealed defects in the passive house grade windows purchased for the job. Guiding the GC, TMI® disassembled the window frames and observed the manufacturer had missing sealants within the windows assembly. Again, follow-up testing confirmed the repairs had been effective. the final whole building air tightness test result was .065cfm/sq.ft.- a very tight building! Final testing included American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards: ASTM E779, E1186, C1060, ISO 6781.
