How is Thermal Imaging used to Diagnose Air Leakage?

Infrared thermography uses a high resolution infrared camera to measure surface temperatures across various objects and materials. Infrared imaging can be used to detect variations in surface temperatures (thermal anomalies) that might indicate a potential deficiency.

For those who are unfamiliar with thermal imaging, it can be difficult to interpret what a thermal image shows. A thorough understanding of thermography and building science is necessary to make accurate interpretations of thermal patterns.

TMI® offers non-invasive infrared thermography services to diagnose wet roof insulation, missing or damaged wall insulation, underground steam lines, radiant floors, rebar locations, stucco and EIFS inspections, air leakage, and latent moisture. During an air leakage test, airflow warms or cools leakage path surfaces (depending on the inside/outside air temperatures).

TMI® experts have the knowledge and experience to analyze thermal images and accurately identify thermal anomalies. Our best practice recommendations effectively guide the remediation process to avoid costly delays.

TMI® maintains on staff certified Building Science, Level I, Level II and Level III thermographers trained by the highly recognized and accredited Infrared Training Center (ITC). ITC is the only organization to receive ISO 9001 certification. ITC courses attended by our staff meet or exceed ASTN SNT-TC-1a guidelines, and our Level I and Level II certifications are accredited by NETA.

Smoke Fog Testing

How does Smoke Testing Assist our Clients?

In our experience, smoke fog testing is among the most effective methods to locate areas of suspected air leakage. While blower door fans pressurize a building, non-toxic fog or smoke is applied near a suspected leak. The pressure generated by the blower door fans forces the fog or smoke through the air leakage site, making it easier to locate and repair.

In many cases, smoke testing or fog testing are used as supplemental test to confirm potential issues identified during other diagnostic testing. TMI® technicians use findings from thermal imaging to identify specific locations for fog and smoke testing. This seamless integration of building diagnostics allows for immediate, on-site confirmation of air leakage locations.
